PROFILE

A workshop making "Bashofu," a cloth woven from fibers obtained from basho plant. “Bashofu” is a traditional textile of Okinawa with a history of more than 400 years. It was
designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property in 1974. The weaver, Toshiko Taira is a living national treasure and still makes Bashofu threads with the younger
generation at her workshop in Kijoka, Ogimi Village.
